Hi families,
My name is Laura. I am so excited to join the team at Kindred Kids with Sam and Erin, our ESDM practitioners! I'd love to share a little bit about my background and passion for working with autistic kids.
I am a mum to three gorgeous high school-age children. My son was diagnosed with Selective Mutism at the age of three (he is now in Year 12 and is beyond thriving) and as NDIS had not been created and launched yet, we engaged school services for the development of his language. However, I wanted to do more for him, and I decided to develop my own personal knowledge of the characteristics of autism and language delay so I could effectively support my son as best as possible at home.
This led to me working in intervention at a school, delivering the Support-a-Talker program and also supporting children with disabilities in their learning and behaviour. This experience really solidified my passion for the intervention space and working with children with autism in particular. I moved into working as a Therapy Assistant (Level 2) in a multidisciplinary clinic supporting speechies, psychologists and occupational therapists to deliver therapy to autistic children. I implemented therapy plans to children 1:1 and supported groups (ages varying from 2-18 years) across diverse environments (daycares, schools, homes and in clinic). Also, as part of this role, I completed a Post Graduate Certificate in Autism Studies through Griffith University which really helped to inform and extend my practice and knowledge of autistic children and adults.
Last year I operated as Lead Educator for my previous clinic's Early Intervention Program which launched in January 2023 within a mainstream daycare service on the Sunshine Coast. I gained invaluable experience in the areas of inclusion and Early Years Childhood Education (working towards a Certificate 3 in Early Childhood Education and Care) that I look forward to utilisng in my new role at Kindred Kids. I am highly engaged in the area of Early Intervention and am so eager to continue developing professionally in this area.
I am beyond thrilled to join the team and look forward to meeting and having some fun with your gorgeous children!
Meet you soon!
Laura
